Bringing a Community’s Story to Life

Mexicans In Harlem will be directed by Cristy Trabadass and will follow the talented Mexican artists from Mano a Mano: Mexican Culture Without Borders. The doc short will capture their meticulous work as they create and install four authentic ofrendas for the annual Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration. This year the locations include The Hispanic Society of America, St. Marks Church, David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center, and the Flat Iron Building.

Mano a Mano: Mexican Culture Without Borders is serving as our fiscal sponsor, so any donations to our project are tax-deductible.

Let’s break some misconceptions and bring cultural awareness front and center. Día de Muertos is a deeply meaningful tradition where Mexicans celebrate and honor their ancestors and loved ones by creating altars, or ofrendas.

These altars welcome the spirits back to the land of the living for Noche de Muertos. Each element on the ofrenda has a significant role: candles serve as guiding lights, flowers, and food celebrate the souls’ arrival, and water quenches their thirst. The arches and levels of each altar symbolize the passage between life and death.

By contributing to Mexicans in Harlem you are helping to document and share the beauty of this tradition and the stories of the people who keep it alive. Your support is crucial in making this project a reality and in fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of Mexican culture.

Thank you for your generosity.
